Autumn leaves

Autumn leaves offer much potential in Armidale and surrounds at this time of year.

Simply raking leaves with a child-sized (or, cut down adult rake) is real work for young children. Make a pile to jump into or over, or a series of piles like hurdles.

More settled playful experiences might be pattern making or threading with leaves. For patterning collect fallen leaves with children and invite pattern making and sorting of leaves on a flat plain surface such as cardboard from an old box, or a towel placed on the ground.

Threading leaves might be with small sticks or a darning needle and thread such as string, raffia or wool. Don’t forget to pose some questions about why leaves change colour in autumn and perhaps why some don’t, many theories might emerge.
