Local wildlife

Local wildlife abounds near Armidale, so take the time to go on some short local walks with children looking for evidence of animals both large and small. Koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, wombats, lizards and a wide variety of birds can be seen and don’t forget to look for evidence of animals such as droppings, scratchings, holes and nests then speculate together what might have been there.

Find out what children may know about these animals and what questions they have, then search together for more information. Adults don’t need to know the answers, but modelling how to find out is equally, if not more valuable.

Make use of local guide books or perhaps the Australian Museum website which has a range of animal fact sheets and images, https://australianmuseum.net.au/learn/animals/

Wildlife related construction projects are also possible, perhaps make a frog pond or a bird-bath. Building bird, bat or possum boxes might a useful home project if you are handy with timber and nails, find relevant information here: https://www.backyardbuddies.org.au/habitats/build-a-nest-box
